Sunless Tanning

There's no doubt about the fact that overexposure to the sun can do a lot of damage to your skin.
Apart from the fact that you increase the chances of getting skin cancer, the damage caused by exposure to the sun will age you a lot sooner and that is something we certainly don't want.

Many years ago when the first self tanners came out it was quite easy to tell who was wearing them because they all had an orange glow about them.
With all the research and development that has gone into self tan products over the years it is difficult to determine what is and isn't a fake tan these days provided they have been applied correctly.

The application process is one of the most important things about using self tanners.
Provided you buy a good product from a quality manufacturer the only thing you really need to concern yourself with is the application.

You should always choose a color that matches your natural skin tone.
In making the right choices here you'll have a far more natural look and it will be a lot more difficult for people to determine whether it is a fake tan or you have genuinely been sunbathing.
You will have all the benefits of looking like a bronzed beauty without the negative effects of the sun.

The first step in getting a natural is to exfoliate skin.
This will make it a lot easier for you to apply the tan evenly and blend it into your skin.
After exfoliating, moisturize your skin in any dry areas as they will soak up more of the tan and in doing so you will get an unnatural look in those dry skin areas such as your elbows.

Other areas that you need to be particularly careful around include your ankles and feet where a lack of care will result in 'tidelines'.

Obviously the more you use fake tans the better you will get at applying them and provided you take the time to apply the tan in even strokes it is not too difficult to get a natural looking tan.


Check Your Moles

Most people have moles somewhere on the body.

Fortunately most of these moles present no danger to us however it is better to be safe than sorry and if you're unsure about any of the moles then don't waste any time in seeing a specialist.

Moles are a cluster of pigmented cells and most people tend to get more of them as they age.

You should always monitor the moles to see if there have been any changes or any irregularities that have begun to occur.

Irregular changes in the shape or the color of them could indicate that it is skin cancer.

By checking your entire body on a regular basis you will notice any changes and the sooner you do spot any changes the easier it will be to eliminate any problems.

If the mole has changed color, size, or shape then it is time to see your doctor or specialist so they can determine why this is happening.

If the border of the mole becomes asymmetrical then this is a sign that there is some unwanted activity that needs to be investigated further.

Any moles that become itchy or bleed, or where the surface has become crusty, need to be checked immediately as skin cancer can have similar features.

A healthy mole would generally be flat or slightly raised, and will be even in color and texture.

You can get your moles surgically removed for cosmetic reasons but be aware that people with certain skin types scar more easily than others and the scar could look worse than the mole.

There has been a significant increase in the incidence of melanoma in recent years due to the depletion of the ozone layer and as malignant melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer it is a wise investment to get any moles or spots checked on a regular basis.
 



Problems with Veins.

Varicose veins are enlarged veins often on the backs of the legs, and generally appear as dark blue or purple veins that are highly visible and quite unappealing.
Fortunately there are solutions that are available to get rid of varicose veins.

The reason that varicose veins appear is due to a malfunction in the valves of the veins.
There are many different reasons why these malfunctions occur and some of those reasons are; pregnancy, blood clots, obesity, or hereditary problems.

The valves in the veins will generally work to pump the blood back towards the heart.
Due to the stretching that has occurred in these veins the valves will be unable to close completely and rather than pumping the blood back to the heart, it will pool in the vein causing it to expand and swell.

Depending on the extent and the condition of the problem in the veins it is possible to inject a saline solution into them which will encourage them to restrict and close properly.

Generally this will solve the problem, however where the extent of the damage to the vein is too great for a saline solution to work, it might be necessary for a surgeon to remove the vein completely.

Spider veins can also be a problem but they are a lot easier to fix than varicose veins.
In a similar but smaller condition spider veins have too much blood in them causing them to become visible beneath the skin.

Spider veins are often most prominent on the thighs but they can be dealt with quite easily with the use of laser treatment.

Prior to the use of laser treatment dermatologists used to quarterize these veins using an electric current.
Laser treatment is a lot faster and easier, less painful and more effective.

This laser treatment is effective on spider veins and also on broken capillaries.




Antioxidants for a Better Skin

Antioxidants are important to keep your skin in the best condition possible.
A sufficient supply of antioxidants will help to moisturize your skin and stop it from becoming dry and flaky.
Antioxidants will also help to repair damaged skin and prevent damage to skin cells that are caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are molecules that cause damage to the cells by the depleting them from getting a sufficient supply of oxygen.

The production of free radicals is stimulated by many different sources including cigarette smoke, alcohol, UV light, pollution and so on.

The collagen that helps us maintain the youthful appearance gets broken down as these free radicals damage the skin cells.

The vitamins A, C and E, and beta-carotene are the most powerful antioxidants and these are regularly added to quality body care products and in particular moisturizers to help improve the condition of the skin.

The best antioxidants however are those that you get through maintaining a good diet.

Your nutrition has a lot more affect on the condition of your skin due to the necessity of antioxidants to counter the free radicals that are constantly damaging the skin cells.

Antioxidants stimulate the production of collagen and this helps prevent wrinkles.

Antioxidants also help to protect the skin against sun damage so getting a good supply of antioxidants in your diet will reduce the chance of you getting sunburned but it is certainly not a reason to refrain from using a good sunscreen to protect your skin.

As manufacturers look to improve the quality of their products by adding antioxidants and other skincare ingredients, Coenzyme-Q10 has proven very popular due to the fact that it is believed it can stimulate the growth of new cells and in doing so create smoother, firmer and more toned skin.

Whether there is any real benefit from having Q10 in these products has yet to be scientifically proven but there are enough people who believe that it works to warrant its inclusion in skin care products.




Shiatsu

Shiatsu is possibly one of the oldest forms of massage known.

It differs from Swedish massage in the manner that it focuses more on the pressure of the fingertips to work the muscles and release energy from specific points on the body.

It is similar in a way to reflexology, but rather than just working on the feet, shiatsu works on more areas of the body and targets the same points on the body that you would expect to get treated with acupuncture.

These pressure points release energy, improve circulation, and in doing so, get rid of toxins that are stored in the muscles and the skin and help to revive the body.

Shiatsu can relieve many different problems within the body, from stress and nausea to other symptoms that are caused by any form of blockages or circulation problems.

The traditional approach for shiatsu is for the patient to lie on a mat on the floor, and for the massage therapist to use fingers, elbows, hands and feet to apply pressure to the specific acupressure points.

By applying constant pressure to these points for slightly longer than you would receive with a normal massage, the body begins to release its own endorphins.

These endorphins are the body's natural painkillers and while you might feel some pain when receiving the treatment, the release of the endorphins should make you feel energized soon after and for several days after the treatment.

Unlike other forms of massage shiatsu generally does not require the use of oil and you can get a treatment while remaining fully clothed.

It does not rely on rubbing the muscles, as the benefit comes from extended time that pressure is applied to one area at a time.

This makes for a particularly convenient natural treatment that can take very little time and offer big rewards.




Reflexology

Reflexology is a foot massage where the various different areas of the foot are linked to other parts of the body.
By massaging the foot in each particular area you can expect a gain relief at the corresponding part of the body.

While there are some people who are still skeptical about the benefits that can be obtained in these other areas of the body from reflexology, the fact still remains for many people, that a foot massage can eliminate a lot of stress from the body.

This reduction of stress from the body can help to revitalize you, and any reduction in stress will certainly help the body to function better.

Tired feet can make the whole body feels tired and we all know that a tired body will never look its best.

People with blood circulation problems can get quite a lot of benefit from reflexology as it will stimulate the blood flow in the feet.
This will also help maintain the skin in better condition around that area.

Using a body cream while performing reflexology will help soften the skin and reduce cracking that can form around the heels and the sides of the foot.

Many practitioners of reflexology believe that regular reflexology will help to release toxins from the body and in doing so maintain a healthier body and slow down the aging process.

There are many more however who will swear by the results that they have received and you should certainly not discount reflexology if you're overdue for a little bit of pampered relaxation.

Cervical Smear Test

A cervical smear test is a screening test that looks for any abnormal changes that might appear in the cells of the surface of the cervix.

If there are any abnormal changes they can be treated however not all changes lead to cancer.

It is advisable to have a smear test every few years and in doing so you reduce the chance of getting cervical cancer by almost 90%.

Cervical smear tests are a very good tool for screening and finding out whether there are any problems within the cervix.

As cervical cancer is usually very slow to develop, by having regular tests every few years it will help to ensure that no abnormalities are missed.
A certain percentage abnormalities are missed when having a cervical smear test and regular checks reduce the percentage considerably.

If there is an abnormality shown in the test, a second test will be taken within a few months to check whether the first results were correct or not.

Often some minor abnormalities can return to normal after a short while.

Where there are abnormal cells that require attention, there is a very high success rate in treatment and for this reason it is unfortunate that some woman don't have tests and leave it until it is too late to be treated.

Fortunately cervical cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer.

All women who have ever been sexually active should have smear tests on a regular basis to ensure that they are safe.

Women who have never had sex don't need to have cervical smear tests.

A cervical smear test does not cause any pain and only takes a few minutes, and those few minutes could save your life.

A small sample of cells is taken from the surface of the cervix using a tiny brush and a small spatula.

If you haven't been checked in the last three years then it's time to book in for a test.
